Shopping We are lucky here. In spite of the out-of-town supermarket (providing largely inferior food); there are still many good local shops. Both Launceston and Callinton have good butchers, one of those in Launceston being a Q guild butcher with his own abbattoir, who also sells rare-breed meat. There are several local farms (including our own) where you can buy meat direct. There are good greengrocers, including a delivery van (on Tuesdays) and a farm selling seasonal produce. We also sell any of our own vegetables that are available. We have a number of good bakers, selling excellent bread, pasties and saffron cake. Clotted Cream can be bought from local farms. There are a number of good local cheeses. Scrumpy is made in an old cider press a few miles away. There are good W I Markets on Tuesdays (Launceston) and Wednesdays (Callington) and there are several new Farmers' Markets. Digressing from food a little, we have a very good second-hand bookshop, and a fabric shop which sends materials world-wide, and has one of the best selections anywhere. Details of all these shops are in a folder (with a map) in our Barn. If anyone else living locally wants a copy do ask me. I'd be delighted to make it available. |

Pubs There are a number of good pubs in the area. Here are a few of them. The Springer Spaniel, our nearest pub, only 1/2 a mile down the road. The food is excellent, both at the bar, sitting on the old settles by the open fire, and in the attached restaurant. It has recently changed hands, but the chef is still working there. The Royal, another favourite of ours. It used to brew its own beer until recently, but the beer is still good. It provides good basic pub food, with excellent puddings. There is a proper public bar with old slate floors, where you can wear muddy boots and take a dog.
