Eating Locally

One of the joys of this part of the country is the wonderful food. Cooking is a delight when the local produce tastes so good. There are some good places to eat out, too.

Our Organic Produce

We started converting to organic status in February 1996. The previous occupants of our farm told us that they had not used any artificial fertilisers or other chemicals in the 14 years that they farmed here. Our land achieved organic status in February this year (1999).

The lamb that we are selling this year is therefore not certified 'organic', being 'in conversion' when the ewes went to the ram in November 1998. Our first officially organic lambs will be those born this spring (we lamb late, starting towards the end of March, last year we lambed even later).

Lamb

Our lambs are weaned from their mothers at about 4 to 5 months. They then graze in our fields (which are free from any artificial fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides), with extra hay and grain (grown on the farm) in the winter, until they are about 10 months old.

Growing slowly like this, without being fed intensively on concentrates, gives them a wonderful flavour.

We will have some lambs ready this March.

All lambs come jointed & packed for the freezer.

We sell them as either a whole or a half lamb @ £2.00 a lb. or as a pack of joints and chops @ £2.50 a lb.

A whole lamb (30 - 40 lbs.) comes as 2 legs, 2 shoulders, approximately 24 chops, 2 breasts and some stewing meat.

A pack comes as one shoulder, one leg and about 12 chops.

Chicken

Organic chicken tastes nothing like even conventional free-range. It tastes like the chickens we raised ourselves when I was a child; really meaty and oh, undescribable. We had one from Jo and Richard Carlisle(who have been rearing chickens for some time),about 6 months ago, and my mouth is watering now as I think about it..

We are going into a joint venture with Jo and Richard, who became organic a little before us. Jo loves the little chicks so she and Richard will rear them to 4 weeks and then they will come to us to roam in our fields.(Protected from foxes by electric fencing).

We will have our first organic chickens ready at the beginning of June. If you want chickens before June then telephone Jo and Richard on 01822 833 969. They will be 4 - 5lbs. in weight (again, like our lambs, growing slowly without being 'pushed'). They will cost £2.00 @ lb.
